Bio I have worked as a physiotherapist specialising in the management of musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions for over 30 years. I am currently employed as a Consultant MSK Physiotherapist at North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. As part of this role I am leading a large-scale redesign project working on system improvement for patients with MSK conditions in the borough of St Helens. My consultant role also involves teaching and research. I work closely with Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) and I have vast experience of both leading and delivering post-graduate MSc modules in advanced MSK practice. I have published several research papers in the field and have co-authored a book on MSK prescribing. I gained membership of the Musculoskeletal Association of Physiotherapists (MACP) in 1991 and I was awarded an MACP Fellowship in 2008 in recognition of my contribution to the MACP organisation and promoting post-graduate education. Over the course of my career I have undertaken several transformation projects and contributed to local and national MSK initiatives. I have represented my profession and professional body, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), on many occasions including working on NHS England, Public Health England and Advancing Quality Alliance (AQuA) projects. In addition to my Consultant role I have undertaken secondments which I feel have enhanced my management and leadership skills. I have worked as an NHS Service Improvement Manager and have qualifications in project management; I have also undertaken a secondment in Business Development to lead responses to MSK tender opportunities. From 2015 -2017 I was seconded part time to the role of Assistant Clinical Director in the Trust, and this gave me extensive experience in risk management and governance processes and enabled me to contribute to strategic organisational development. This experience allowed me to appreciate the relevance of MSK conditions in a wider health context including gaining an understanding of the competing priorities faced in healthcare. Within this role I undertook transformational projects integrating physical and mental health care across community services; this work was shortlisted for two national awards. I am passionate about improving care for patients with MSK conditions and despite different opportunities I have taken throughout my career I have always come back to MSK. I am on the Board of Trustees for the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance (ARMA) and through this and my Versus Arthritis Champion role I hope to further influence high quality care for patients with MSK conditions on a national level.
