Digital community wound management system

The Wound care Information System for Health (WISH) project for the co-development and evaluation of a digital system (WoundPad) was funded by Innovate UK in 2018. The system provides a complete management solution for wounds, incorporating image capture, video consultation, advice & guidance and referral into a single software platform. It was  making steady progress, with beta testing from December 2019 of the system operationally in the NHS, until the pandemic led community team leaders to re-evaluate the urgent need for rapid implementation of such a digital system which allows remote review including advice & guidance and long-term record-keeping of wound progression, were images  can also be contributed to by the patient or their carer. This led to a massive acceleration in system adoption across Greater Manchester with particular use of the image capture and video consultation elements of the system as it allowed the remote management of many clinical issues.

What is needed to sustain the change?

It is a concern that the progress seen will not be taken forward and embedded once the pressure on the system is reduced. Loss of the impetus will slow the adoption of important guidelines and initiatives coming from the National Wound Care Strategy Programme and slow the modernisation of community wound management, particularly the development of clinical decision support and system wide metrics.
