Non Medical Prescribing
Our National Rheumatology Physiotherapy Survey of November 2019 (full write up coming soon!) revealed 20% of respondents as Non Medical Prescribers. This role for physiotherapists is not new and advanced practice for rheumatology physiotherapists has been championed since at least 2001. Physiotherapists are inputting in drugs databases (eg. Bluetec), they are monitoring patients on csDMARDs, biologics and newer drugs (often whilst running axSpA clinics - another big development opportunity by the way) and they are performing joint and soft tissue injections. In addition to these obvious NMP-linked activities any physiotherapist as a part of their assessment and management of rheumatology patients will be asking about medications used.
During the pandemic physiotherapists have been taking on extra responsibilities and often with less support from the wider rheumatology team. NMP skills are being used by more physiotherapists and more often.
Now is the time to consider a wider role out of NMP training to the rheumatology physiotherapy work force (whilst of course remembering that exercise is the best medicine!)
What is needed to sustain the change?
NMP awareness, training and support
Supporting advanced roles for physiotherapists (and of course for AHP and nursing colleagues too!)
What is your region?
North West
I suspect that based on the work being completed some legislative extension in the NMP prescribing rights for physiotherapists may be of benefit.
