East Lancashire Paediatric Physiotherapy triage initiative

All new referrals to the service are screened within 24 hours and placed on one of 4 pathways. First line management is now to provide advice and information rather than waiting for an initial appointment, which means patients can get started on appropriate treatment straight away, and sometimes can even be discharged.  There is also an option of a telephone or video consultation at the point of triage as one of the other pathways.

This change has reduced our waiting list, and patients have reported satisfaction with the new process.  Parents and carers have also felt that the information provided has helped them to manage their child's condition/symptoms with quicker recovery.

Patients also have the option to self-refer in to our service which improves access.

We are currently auditing the results and will have data by the end of June.

What is needed to sustain the change?

We need to ensure we have the right IT kit and training across the other teams to spread the initiative, but this is something that we plan to continue with long term as it has had significant benefits to how we manage our service.

We need to continually review our self-management leaflets to ensure they contain the right information and remain evidence-based.

We need to continue to gather patient feedback to ensure this process is continuing to add value to patients as well as our service.
