Say No To Plastic Aprons!

Horizon 1

We use plastic apron when seeing patients in side rooms and isolation. Although it demonstrates a certain discipline, hand on heart, we know it doesn't protect the patient from infection, nor does it protect the staff. If we are going to accept that Corona virus and other infections are going to remain amongst us for a considerable period of time we should invest in full sleeves re-usable gowns. The gowns must be water repellants and tie in the back like surgical gowns still in-use in some centres. It doesn't need to be reinforced like the ones for orthopaedic procedures. The material certainly ought to be durable for multiple use. I have not seen this in-use in the NHS but is a common practice in North America. I am happy to discuss the idea further.

Needless to say, it will also be good for the planet too.

COI: None

What is needed to sustain the change?

NHS systems rely on national guidance and supply chain. Hence, the change is only possible if it is accepted as a reasonable idea and supported with appropriate funding.

What is your region?

Plastic apron is not designed for respiratory infection. It is for fluid borne and other contact transmission eg blood, plastering, fluids etc.
Using plastic apron for SARS-CoV2 is inappropriate and false economy.

Agree with the comment. May be suitable when serving dinners too.

Excellent idea! Good for the planet, good for patients, staff, and as they are reusable, maybe even for the NHS pursestrings!
