ReAbility Online Therapy Studio - enabling chronic rehabilitation

Developed by the world-renowned Sheba Medical Center the RO Therapy Studio concept allows Physios and Therapists to deliver remote formal consulting and assessment services including patient self-practice, educational video instruction and 1:4 ‘real-time’ therapy with the ability to monitor participation and progress all within one secure GDPR compliant system.

Unlike a simple Zoom or Skype platform, ReAbility Online has been tailor-made for remote rehabilitation therapy services. Therapists can prescribe exercise programmes from a library of video’s and intelligent games to challenge the patients. The system enables the therapists to see who is logged in and practising and allows up to 4 patients to be closely monitored at once via 4 separate video windows. Therapists can then have individualised video sessions and drop in on the patient’s self-practice. The system records a range of data for each patient and presents it in a dashboard for the Therapist delivering vital information for review and discussion.

The concept is based around therapists being able to deliver rehabilitation over longer cycles to larger groups of patients whilst crucially delivering tailored programmes to each patient. The ability to provide 1:1 real-time therapy whilst working simultaneously with a group of patients is unique in the market and will enable therapists to treat more patients at a lower cost with less time.

It is widely accepted that adherence to rehabilitation programmes drives the best outcomes and this allows patients to log in and self-practice and receive crucial 1:1 therapist contact for prescription changes, demonstration, monitoring and motivation! Adherence to rehab programmes drops off significantly once a therapist steps away.

Therapists can utilise the 'studio' environment by being logged on for say 2-3 hours a day or perhaps  three times a week with patients joining the sessions to self-practice and receive 1:1 'real-time' therapy. Therapists can manage the right size group of patients depending on their indications and needs but essentially manage many more patients using less time.

What is needed to sustain the change?

  • Maintain the momentum for digital services where its appropriate to increase exposure to effective medical rehab services
  • GP's and commissioning groups to adopt the use of online rehabilitation services to offer cost effective tailored rehab at exactly the point the patient needs it

This sounds great. The main question for me is - how do we get people engaged so their adherance doesnt drop off when the clinician steps away? any thoughts appreciated.....
