Service Review- Are we adhereing to NICE approved National Back pain pathway recommendations?

by Diarmaid Ferguson | May 23, 2020 | in Spinal Conditions

Reduced clinical commitments has allowed our team to review our current services and see if we are adhering to NICE approved and Nationally recommended guidance. The Spinal Services GIRFT Programme National Specialty Report first recommendation is for CCGs and trusts to agree local plans to implement and adhere to the National Back & Radicular Pain Pathway. We took time to review our services to see how we matched up. (Pathway, GIRFT report attached)

Locally, although we are achieving recommendations in many areas, major components of  pathway are lacking, notably- timely/ appropriate surgery and Combined Psychological and Physical programmes.

The National Back Pain Clinical network https://www.ukssb.com/nbp-cn @NBP_CN have tools to help you embed and adhere to expected national standards of care.  NBP-CN is working with others to develop more tools to help evaluate your service and implement national guidance.

What is needed to sustain the change?

We should not reinvent the wheel.

NICE guidance, GIRFT reports and National consensus documents have existed for many years and the advice remains largely unchanged. We have agreed what we should be doing.

The issue is IMPLEMENTATION of these recommendations in a health system which is resistant to real change, a change we know will help our patients, us and society at large.

Let us not go back to what we were doing pre Covid,

We know we have been doing our best, but now we know better, let's get back to doing better

What is your region?
