Orthopaedic Consultants/MSK physios staffed in MIU
Orthopaedics on site working alongside ENP’s has provided fantastic patient journey for patients presenting to MIU. Complex treatments that would have previously meant patients travelled to ED for Ortho review, was carried out in the MIU by Ortho team at time of presentation. Patients routinely referred to virtual # clinic were reviewed directly by on site Ortho team, increasing the direct discharges.
Developing closer working relationships between Ortho and ENP team. Ortho team have increased knowledge of ENP remit. Discussions already around reviewing and increasing the direct discharges of patients with # by the ENP team.
MSK/Advanced Practice physio one on shift daily to complement the ENP team worked well. Patients were reviewed by them that previously may have fallen out with the ENP remit.
We have identified that with collaborative team working that has been adopted for covid 19, there has been a fall in almost 5% of patients that were redirected to our local ED from MIU in April (One factor that has to be considered with the data - patients that presented were true minor injuries which is not a normal pattern for our unit)
