Digital apps for Pain Education and Pain Score assessment developed at CUH

by Rokas Tamosauskas | May 20, 2020 | in Pain Management

We introduced 2 locally devloped digital applications pre-COVID:  for Patient Pain Education and Online Pain Score assessment app. Pain Education app provides our Pain Clinic patients access to an 8 modules of online learning platform. Pain physiology, pain management strategies and techniques are discussed and demonstrated by the Nurses, Physiotherapists and Pain Consultants in a systematic manner. Patients get a link to access this platform online from the comfort of their homes. Once completed all 8 modules, app sends notification to Pain Clinic. Patients can then be booked for the next step in their pathway. Our Pain score app is set up to assess the response to diagnostic interventions. Patients get SMS messages 1 week prior to their diagnostic pain intervention, to which they reply by stating their pain score from 0 tro 10. They may be sending as many or as little pain scores as they wish, but there is a minimum of 1 a day. They can choose to enter their pain scores via the phone app or via website. 3-4 weeks post intervention, Consultants have virtual treatment review clinic where they see a graphical representation of the pain scores before and after an intervention with basic statistics (mean score change with SD). This guides our plan for any furhter treatments, such as booking patients for a facet joint denervation procedure, as per NICE guideline. Pain score graph can be uploaded onto EMR system (Epic) that is used by our Trust and becomes part of their progress note. In principle, this app can be used to assess the response to any pain intervention (drugs, physio, PMP, BPP, etc).

What is needed to sustain the change?

Commissioning of a virtual treatment review clinics - needs tariff;

Hi Rokas, This sounds interesting. Do you collect any other information or just pain scores?
