National speciality "zoom" calls and whatsapp groups

by Mike Reed | May 17, 2020 | in Planned and Elective Care

National speciality "zoom" calls. Once a week the clinical directors from around 200 NHS trauma and orthopaedic units get together on a 30 minute call. This is led by NHS and T&O leaders, with Q&A from those on the call. These could be less frequent when the situation settles - perhaps once a month. Similarly whatsapp allows for direct quick communication and rapid transfer of information. This promotes a wide understanding of issues facing both the shop floor of the NHS, and the NHS centre. This is rapid evolution and then communication of ideas.

What is needed to sustain the change?

Probably an extremely small amount of funding - hundreds of pounds a year.

Commitment from NHS leaders to continue their support (Chris Moran) and the BOA Exec with other senior leaders also speaking.

What is your region?

I think this is a good idea. There are avenues that this can be explored further, for example the British Orthopaedic Directors Society (https://www.bodsorthopaedics.co.uk/). They have a representative on council.

The same could be happening regionally to coordinate local responses and develop regional pathways. Great for shared learning. I’ve witnessed it working well in my wife’s speciality O&G at a regional, national and international level.
