Use of a digital mobile xray machine in theatre to obtain post-operative hip arthroplasty xrays.
1. Improved patient safety - xrays obtained within 10 minutes of wound closure.
2. Better quality xrays than departmental films as the patient is still anaesthetised.
3. Better training - trainees found the early feedback very valuable for training and would recommend the process to other hospitals.
4. Reduced hospital traffic as patients no longer need to be transferred from the ward to the xray department.
5. Reduced burden on ward staff who previously may have been required to escort patients from the ward to the xray department.
What is needed to sustain the change?
The process has the full support of our radiology colleagues and we aim to continue this indefinitely.

Supporting data: The Pulvertaft Hand Unit in Derby runs the only on-line Radiation Protection Mini-C arm training course. Since the incident began, the following numbers have taken the course (provided free to give a 1-year certificate): England = 1,110; Wales 47; Scotland 40; Ireland 20. Thus, 1,217 doctors have done the course in 8 weeks.
