Adoption of Clinics via Telephone and Videoconferencing

Patient benefits in terms of convenience - particularly impressed with ability to explain and review scans together remotely with the same degree of clarity as face to face.

Combined with robust and accessible patient information booklets/links sent via email/SMS help to support pt's feeling empowered to attempt self management where appropriate.

Hospital: frees up clinic space and resource for more F2F. More efficient with respect to parking. Fewer journeys, less pollution.

What is needed to sustain the change?

Chris, I agree that this is a way forward but in our area a significant number of patients, particularly elderly, do not have smart phones that can use video technology which is limiting. In addition many patients do not opt for video even if we have it available.
However, the secure texting for links to self management information has been invaluable. I hope that these methods can be offered for the triage service going forward.

Fully agree this is a "no brainer", and during the pandemic this will help with social distancing for the few that need to come.

In our experience, the very elderly who probably wouldn't be receiving this type of care don't have access to the tech, but the oldest cohort of patients who are still wanting arthroplasty procedures, are tech savy to make this all work.
