Improved abilitiy to impart sef-management strategies

The patient management ethos has altered, and it has had to redefine where the NHS intervenes and how it achieves this. The opportunity for patients and clinicians to think differently around how MSK disorders are managed has led clinicians to  adapt their style to a more shared decision model that is highly influenced by self-management supported strategies of practice - a health model versus disease model is being rapidly adopted.

What is needed to sustain the change?

Clear outcomes across different sectors to evaluate a range of experiences and metrics that give the detail around what is best practice. National data sets.

What is your region?

Agree this is an opportunity to re-write the narrative about how we help people manage chronic MSK conditions such as OA.

" The Patient Will See You Know" by Eric Topol is an interesting read around the change in emphasis in how people expect healthcare to be delivered. https://amzn.to/2yQ9E3L

Thanks Neil- do you think patient expectations will revert to previous levels post COVID or is this an opportunity to reframe the therapeutic relationship?

I think there will be a cultural shift that will encourage patients into a different mindset - which we must encourage but also validate with high quality data and outcomes, although societally self-management is somewhat forced upon us - this should not be seen as the logistical norm, rather the way in which we enhance outcome for the community , that there is a thankful positive outcome that we see a new way of managing many MSK conditions and re-framing them that sets the tone for future generations.
